B est known as the hairstylist behind the Kardashians, Ashley Graham, Dove Cameron and so many other celebrities, Justine Marjan talks with us about her journey, latest collaborations, must-have skincare products and what it’s like preparing for awards season.
Tell us a little about you and your unique approach to hair
I started doing hair 15 years ago and worked in a salon outside of my hometown in Santa Barbara for 8 years before pursuing a freelance career in LA. I left a successful career as a salon stylist and moved to LA where I knew no one for the opportunity to assist key figures in the industry I looked up to. I ended up working for Jen Atkin, becoming the Editorial Director for Mane Addicts and doing education for OUAI. Eventually I started building my own clientele and branching off on my own. Now I’ve been the Global Stylist for Tresemme for the past 4 years, leading shows backstage at NYFW and have been the lead stylist for Bravo’s Project Runway the past two seasons. I’m also the brand ambassador for my favorite hot tool company, ghd and came out with a range of hair accessories with Kitsch int Oct 2018.
What is it like being a celebrity hairstylist preparing for awards season?
It’s very much a collaboration between the talent, stylist, and makeup artist. We want every aspect of the look to feel seamless and to tell the same story. We usually all talk beforehand to come up with the look.
What tools or accessories are always packed in your case?
ghd hot tools, Tresemme micro mist hairspray, kitschxjustine hair accessories, the wet brush, hidden crown hair extensions, and a step stool.
What hair trends are you seeing on the red carpet now?
Sophisticated styles like slicked back hair that feels super chic and classic.
You are responsible for some bold and gorgeous looks; what advice can you give to someone who wants to try and create one of your looks at home?
Have fun with it! Play with your hair. It’s not permanent so take that risk and have fun. Don’t overthink it.
Lastly, what skincare products do you always pack in your makeup or travel bag?
