Tips for a Smooth Bikini Line

How did they get there, and what can you do to treat them? While natural and common, ingrown hairs, bikini bumps and scarring are annoying, especially when your plans include pool days.

ACID IS YOUR FRIEND
Ingrown bikini hairs can crop up when the hair follicle is obstructed by dead skin cells, which is where lactic acid and phytic acid really make a difference. Choose products with salicylic acid, lactic acid and niacinamide to help dissolve the top layer of dead skin as well break down the mixture of sebum and dead skin cells that cause obstructions to hairs. It can also help prevent ingrown bikini hairs and treat the marks that they may leave behind. With darker skin, ingrown hairs tend to leave pigmentation marks, but regular use of these acids work wonders to lighten them over time.

The first step in preventing bikini bumps is to remove hair a few days prior to sun exposure. Waxing and laser hair removal treatments can make your skin sensitive for a few days post treatment. Make sure to get treatments done a few days before sun exposure.
Loofahs, exfoliating bath scrubs, body polishes—these shower must-haves are essential for summer skincare and a smooth bikini line. An ingrown hair is basically hair that has curled round and grown back into the skin. An ingrown hair can occur when the hair follicle becomes clogged with dead skin cells. This clogging can force a hair to grow sideways, but regular exfoliation (1-3 times a week) can help bring the hair to the surface of the skin.
USE A SHARP RAZOR
If your body hair is curly or its cut irregularly (via shaving) it can get caught under the skin and form a razor bump. This is common specifically in parts of the body where the skin folds (think underarms and bikini line). If your hair is naturally thick or coarse it can be even more prone to breakouts. So what can you do? Start with warm water. Shave in a warm shower or bath. The warm water will help soften skin and give you a closer and cleaner shave for a smooth bikini line.
If you choose to shave please use a new sharp razor or switch out razor blades very often. Dull razors will not give you a close shave, they can also irritate skin and cause more bumps. Furthermore they can harbor bacteria. So wash, clean and dry them before using again.
USE OILS + BALMS
Post care is an important and proper hair removal step. Post shave, wax and even lasered skin is more tender, red and inflamed. Soothing oil or balms with ingredients like omega 3 fatty acids, Hoya flower, blue butterfly pea flower and vitamin E can help reduce puffiness, irritation, redness and burning. It’s crucial to treat the irritation of razor burns, even burns from bikini waxes (it happens) and laser treatments immediately for quick healing.
RESIST THE PICKING
Extracts are like a mini surgery that should only be done by a skincare professional. You are basically opening up the skin and so much can go wrong, from tearing the skin, spreading infection, scarring and so much more. Usually it turns into something that takes 10x longer to heal, that gets aggravated, red and much much larger.
